William "Bill" Harris


Charles "Bill" William Harris 96, of Glen Easton, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2021 at home. He was born October 30, 1924 in Glen Easton son of Charles B. & Myrtle Elizabeth Zimmerman Harris. A graduate of Cameron High School class of 1943. A veteran of the U.S. Navy. A member of the American Legion Post #18 Cameron. Retired mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. A member of Voture Local #173 40 & 8; Veterans of Foreign War Post #437 Moundsville; Cameron Masonic Lodge #17 A.F. and A.M.; Moundsville Elks Lodge#287. He was in business with his father from discharge until 1950, over the road truck driver from 1950-1963. A member of the West Virginia Rural Letters Carriers Association. Serving as District 6 Secretary 1970-1982; State Vice President 1982-1984 and State President 1985-1987. Bill has 74 consecutive years of membership in his home post, having served as Commander 1969-1970; Vice Commander 1967-1968; Chaplin 1964-1967; and as Adjutant 1971-1981 and again 1989-1999. Started Post Newsletter 1995-present; is presently serving as Post Service Officer. He has served The First District as Vice Commander 1972-1973; The Department as Assistant Sergeant at Arms 1980-1981; President of WALPA 1997-present; member of WV Veterans Council 1998-present; member of Directors 1985-present He has served The American Legion on various committees at The Post District and National levels, presently at National level serving as Vice Chairman National Americanism Council. He was a veteran of World War ll, having served with the United States Navy in both The European and Pacific Theaters, aboard a Destroyer Escort for two years. His rate at discharge being Petty Officer Third Class. Preceded in death by wife, Vivian (Crow) Harris, one son, Donnie Harris. Survived by one daughter, Terri (Bruce) Whipkey of Cameron, WV; one son, Michael (Kathy) Harris of Glen Easton, daughter-in-law Debra Jackley Harris (Chris Richardson) 3 step-grandchildren and 6 step-great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends Wednesday October 20, 2021 at the Anderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services 1109 2nd St. Moundsville from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. where services will be held Thursday October 21, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Rodney "Doc" Hubbs officiating. Burial in Universalist Church Cemetery on Fork Ridge where the Cameron Masonic Lodge will conduct Graveside services and the Cameron Legion will conduct military honors .
